The erotica authors I regularly talk to - among others - were all atwitter today when we all got the following e-mail from BookStrand, a retailer we all use to publish our books:

Dear Publisher,

We were informed by PayPal, without notice, and by our credit card processing company, that we are required to remove all titles at BookStrand.com with content containing incest, pseudo incest, rape, and bestiality, effective immediately.

We request that you immediately log into your account and unpublish all titles that contain the restricted content.  If you have uploaded titles containing restricted content and do not unpublish these titles as we are requesting, we will deactivate your entire publisher account, which will remove all your titles from sale.

We urge you to log into your account and remove these titles as soon as possible to prevent your account from being deactivated today.

If your account is deactivated, it may or may not be reinstated in the future. After deactivation, requests for reinstatement will require us to go through your catalog, which may take several weeks or longer for us to process. 

For your reference, please review our policies regarding titles that are restricted or suppressed: http://www.bookstrand.com/suppressed.

Meanwhile, we have disabled the Indie Titles page at www.bookstrand.com/indie until all affected titles have been removed.

That’s not a big deal for me at all (I have only one title that even skirts any of the things they’re talking about, and it involves no sexual acts, just a bunch of teasing - and it’s on Kindle Select, so it isn’t even available on BookStrand), but it’s certainly a big deal for a number of the people who have made a fair killing on titles that involve incest, rape and bestiality.

Being simply atwitter turned into being downright worried when the following e-mail was sent out mere hours later:

Please note that the earlier communication from us regarding PayPal’s restriction of content is valid.  PayPal has deactivated our account and will reinstate payment processing at BookStrand once we have removed all content that PayPal considers obscene, which includes incest, pseudo-incest, bestiality and rape for sexual titillation.

If you are a publisher or indie author who has not uploaded titles with restricted content to BookStrand.com, you are not affected by our request.  For the most part, titles published by indie authors are in violation of PayPal’s and credit card processor policies.

Ruh-roh.

So much like the pedocaust of sorts that took out a bunch of titles on All Romance eBooks a week or two ago, BookStrand has to go through and remove any titles that fall under the umbrella of rape, incest and bestiality.

What’s interesting about talking to erotica authors is almost every one of them have, at some base level, a line they simply will not cross. It’s something so bizarre or offensive or downright wrong that - even though they’re simply writing words, not engaging in or photographing or setting up any actual acts - they can’t bring themselves to put such materials out there. For a lot of them, it’s bestiality. They look at the top sellers on, say, Smashwords, see a bunch of stories about women fucking dogs - not werewolves, dogs - and they cringe. For some, it’s rape. For some, it’s incest.

Full disclosure: My personal line falls somewhere short of all three of those, and while it has probably cost me sales it has also helped me feel a lot better about writing this stuff. When I sat down to write my first story, I actually had to freeze and sit there with my fingers hovering over the keys for a bit while I gathered up the courage to type ‘wet cunt.’ Now? I practically use the words ‘wet cunt’ like a comma. The idea, of course, is that expanding your boundaries is generally not a bad thing - especially in the field of erotica writing. My boundaries, however, simply won’t go out that far. I don’t look down upon, think less of or begrudge anyone who writes about those topics. It’s just so outside of the range of ‘my bag’ that I can’t properly write about it.

Here’s the thing, though: Those rape, incest and bestiality titles wouldn’t be on the market if those particular things didn’t sell like goddamn hotcakes. So when an operation or entity like PayPal or the credit card companies decide it’s no longer okay for materials about those topics to be sold, it makes me want to back up and reassess the nature of what we do. Not because what I think we do is wrong, but because we do the sort of thing that can, when questioned morally, be defended with ‘well, there’s an audience for it - are you going to come down on everyone who buys this stuff, too?’
